Another way of looking at "What's The Matter Here?" is that the last line is Merchant's way of twisting what sounds like preachiness around and essentially berating herself (the narrator) for not being able to do something about it.

As far as I'm aware, Natalie Merchant is an ardent supporter of many good causes - I think a little preachiness in one's late teens and early 20s is forgiveable.

I'm always excited to see attention brought to this album. This was actually my first exposure to Dr. John. Although I enjoy his other recordings, I wish he would have stuck with this stuff for a while. Being both a native Louisianian and an avid fan of psychedelia, this is one of my favorite albums ever. Good comparison to Barrett-era Floyd.
Do you know where I can find more stuff like this?

As I stated in the blog entry, I didn't come up with this generation scheme; it's the product of Joshua Glenn, who addresses alternate proposed generations such as "Generation Jones" on his own blog <a href="http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/ideas/brainiac/2008/04/final_words_on.html" rel="nofollow">here.</a>

I will say, however, that I am inclined to reject any proposed generation that sounds like the name of an ill-conceived musical collaboration between Billy Idol and Mike Edwards.

Interesting blog, but it’s missing an important part of the equation: Generation Jones (born 1954-1965, between the Boomers and Generation X). Google Generation Jones, and you’ll see it’s gotten a ton of media attention, and many top commentators from many top publications and networks (Washington Post, Time magazine, NBC, Newsweek, ABC, etc.) now specifically use this term. In fact, the Associated Press' annual Trend Report forecast the Rise of Generation Jones as the #1 trend of 2009. Here's a page with a good overview of recent media interest in GenJones: http://generationjones.com/2009latest.html

It is important to distinguish between the post-WWII demographic boom in births vs. the cultural generations born during that era. Generations are a function of the common formative experiences of its members, not the fertility rates of its parents. Many experts now believe it breaks down more or less this way:

DEMOGRAPHIC boom in babies: 1946-1964
Baby Boom GENERATION: 1942-1953
Generation Jones: 1954-1965
Generation X: 1966-1978

Here is an op-ed about GenJones as the new generation of leadership in USA TODAY:

Of course! Actually, as I recall, the email account I mailed you from ceased to exist shortly thereafter, so it's entirely possible you did reply and I never received it.

Wow, the artists I write about actually read this thing. I guess maybe I should end my four-month hiatus and start posting again?
